Causes of sexually transmissible Infections (STI)

Sexually transmitted infections can be caused by Bacteria (Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, Chlamydia), Parasites (Trichomoniasis) and Viruses (Human Papillomavirus, Genital Herpes, Hepatitis B and HIV).

Sexual activity plays a role in spreading many other infectious agents, although it’s possible to be infected without sexual contact e.g., sharing of contaminated needles.

Common types of STI’s include Chlamydia, Genital Herpes, Gonorrhoea, Hepatitis B, Syphilis, Genital Warts or Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which may also cause cervical cancer in women.

STI Screening

Your sexual health relies on shared prevention with your partner. STI (Sexually Transmissible Infection) are passed on through sexual contact or the exchange of body fluids.

Many people who have an STI don’t have any obvious symptoms or signs. So, it’s important you get the facts about how they are spread and always have safe sex.

Regular screening is advisable for early detection and appropriate management of these infections.

It’s a Good idea to have a STI test if:

You think you might have a STI
You have had unprotected sex, that is, without a condom or dam – including vaginal, oral and anal sex
You have had a condom break or if it falls off during sex
Your partner has another sexual partner or has had previous sexual partners
You have shared injecting equipment
You are starting a new sexual relationship

In addition, screening test for HIV, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis are mandatory in pregnant women, during the first prenatal visit. Screening test for Hepatitis C is also recommended during pregnancy.
