Preventive healthcare consists of measures taken for disease prevention, as opposed to disease treatment.
Just as health encompasses a variety of physical and mental states, so do disease and disability, which are affected by environmental factors, genetic predisposition, disease agents, and lifestyle choices.
At Top Health Doctors, we are actively pursuing many methods in the prevention of disease. We recommend that our patients visit their doctor for regular check-ups, even if they feel healthy, to perform disease screening, identify risk factors for disease, discuss tips for a healthy and balanced lifestyle and stay up to date with immunisations and boosters.
All patients above 65 years old are eligible to receive an annual Medicare funded flu vaccination and also a once off 23vPPV Pneumovax vaccination. In addition, if you are pregnant or if you have certain chronic medical conditions (such as diabetes, heart disease, chronic air way disease or significant asthma and others), you are also entitled to the annual Medicare funded flu vaccination.
In 2018, the federal government has introduced a specially formulated powerful Flu vaccine for over 65 years old (Fluad or Fluzone). In addition, the Queensland government has funded children Flu vaccine for children between 6 months old to 5 years old.
Patients who have sustained a potentially dirtied wound (e.g. stepping onto a dirty nail) are entitled to a Medicare funded Tetanus booster vaccination.
Some common disease screenings we provide include checking for high blood pressure, high blood sugar (a risk factor for diabetes mellitus), high blood cholesterol (risk factor for heart attack and stroke), screening for colon cancer, and other common types of sexually transmitted disease such as chlamydia.
We also encourage mammography (to screen for breast cancer), a Pap Smear (to check for cervical cancer), and screening for osteoporosis for women of the relevant age groups.
Genetic testing can also be performed to screen for mutations that cause genetic disorders or predisposition to certain diseases such as breast or ovarian cancer in conjunction with specialist services.
In addition, there are government Medicare funded chronic health management plans available for our regular patients to assist you with a chronic health or a serious medical condition. These include Diabetes, Asthma, Heart attacks / failure, Chronic Musculoskeletal conditions and many others. Please make an appointment to see if you are eligible to access allied health care funded by Medicare. These include dietician, psychologist, exercise physiologist, physiotherapist and many others.
We also offer specific preventative health assessment packages for Men’s and Women’ s Health (at 40 yrs old), babies and children (usually together with immunisations) and for patients at and over 75 years old. In addition, we offer patients of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background government-funded health care assessments every 9 months.
