Medical Assessment Details
AMSA advises that all domestic seafarers should be assessed for medical fitness for duties at sea on the following occasions (at least):
prior to commencing such employment;
when the medical certificate expires and the person intends to return to a vessel to work in near-coastal waters;
if there is a significant change in the medical condition of the seafarer;
after prolonged sickness absence due to injury or illness
An AMSA Domestic Seafarer medical assessment includes:
General thorough medical assessment (height, weight, BMI, BP, pulse, etc.)
Visual acuity test (distant and near)
Colour vision test (Ishihara test)
Hearing test
Urine test
Other relevant examinations
Depending on the seafarer’s job role, and the findings of the assessment, further investigation including blood tests and or imaging or referral may be indicated.
A Domestic Seafarer Marine Medical certificate is valid for:
Up to 4 years if the person is 19 to 50 years old at the time of assessment
Up to 2 years if the person is 51 to 60 years old at the time of assessment
Up to 1 year if the person is 18 years old or younger, or 61 years old or older at the time of assessment.
