On 21st January 2022, the Novavax (Nuvaxovid) COVID-19 vaccine was approved for use in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), being the 4th Covid-19 vaccine  granted such approval in Australia (after AstraZeneca, Pfizer & Moderna). Most side effects of Novavax (Nuvaxovid) COVID-19 vaccine are mild and usually disappear quickly.

  • Side effects may include injection site pain & tenderness, headache, fatigue, muscle ache, joint pain, nausea and vomiting. You may also experience fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, increased blood pressure, rash (including urticaria) and itchiness.
  • Side effects are more common after dose 2 than dose 1 and more common in people less than 65 years old.

How does COVID-19 Vaccine work?

Vaccines train a person’s immune system to recognise and clear out germs (bacteria and viruses) that can cause serious illness. They strengthen your immune system by training it to recognise and fight against specific germs.

Vaccines contain either killed or weakened versions of the virus that causes the disease or a small part of it, such as a protein or nucleic acid. When you get a vaccine, your immune system recognises these as foreign. It responds by creating memory cells and antibodies that protect you against future infection.
