Local Mental Healthcare & Support

Mental health has been in the news lately, with the impacts of Covid and more recently with several elite athletes leading the way in prioritising their mental health.

The Black Dog Institute reports “54% of people with mental illness do not access any treatment. The proportion of people with mental illness accessing treatment is half that of people with physical disorders”. Your overall well-being includes both your physical and mental health and it’s so important to take care of both.

The decision to seek help is the best way to getting better. Having the option to see a familiar face to guide and support you, in familiar surrounds and close by, may support this choice.Mental health support and treatment with your GP

Your doctor can help you not only with your physical health, but your mental health too. If you are feeling concerned about your mental health, your first place to visit should be your doctor.

Many general practitioners have completed further study in mental health and some even dedicate their practice to caring for patients with mental health needs.

Mental Health Treatment Plans

Mental health treatment plans can be provided to patients who have been diagnosed by their GP as having a mental health disorder.

A mental health treatment plan identifies the type of health care needed for your mental health condition as well as the agreed goals for you personally. The plan may include further referrals to certain services, where necessary,

A mental health treatment plan from your GP can provide 10 individual psychological appointments per calendar year. After your first 6 appointments, you will need to have a review with your doctor to confirm the need for further sessions.

These plans give you access to mental health services, subsidised by Medicare. Note that out of pocket fees may still apply and it’s suggested you contact your local medical centre to understand more.
